Joel acquired his Masters in Social Work from the University of Maryland in 2003 with a specialization in working with children and families. Since 2003, Joel has been working extensively with children, adolescents, and their families in both the public and independent school sectors. In his role as a school social worker, Mr. Gunzburg served as Head of Student Support and School Counselor at the British School of Washington for both the primary and secondary school for 12 years. In this role he provided clinical interventions on both the individual and group level focused on family turmoil, grief and loss, divorce, oppositional behavior, anxiety, Autism Spectrum support, ADHD support, and anger management. Currently, Joel is serving as the Lower School Counselor at Sandy Spring Friends School.
In addition to his clinical work in schools, he developed and presented prevention education workshops for middle and high school students on topics like bullying, substance abuse, life skills, and human sexuality. In 2006, Mr. Gunzburg opened his private practice providing a wide scope of individual and group clinical services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. He also taught a masters level course at The Catholic University’s School of Social Service for clinical treatment of adolescents and young adults.
